The Characters:
Laurie Kenyon, a beautiful, blond, 21 year old college senior, is accused of murdering her professor, Allan Grant. As a result of the trauma of being abducted by a couple at the age of four, Laurie has developed multiple personalities (among whom are: Kate, tough and protective; Leona, seductive and willful; Debbie, the embodiment of Laurie when she was kidnapped; Lee, a boy who bore the brunt of Bic's abuse.)
Sarah Kenyon, sister of Laurie and an attorney. She has quit her job as assistant prosecutor to defend her younger sister.
Bic, Laurie's abductor, an unsavory drifter. By the time Laurie is in college, Bic has changed his name and is a famous television evangelist, the Reverend "Bobby" Hawkins.
Opal, completely devoted to Bic, she helps in the abduction of Laurie.
Dr. Justin Donnelly, an Australian psychiatrist who heads a clinic for multiple disorder patients in Manhattan. Hired by Sarah Kenyon to help Laurie retrieve her repressed memories and personalities, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Sarah.
Gregg Bennett, who is desperately in love with Laurie and does not understand her sudden rejection of him.
Allan Grant, a popular English professor at Laurie's college. Is found dead and Laurie is charged with his murder.
Karen Grant, the professor's widow, who is threatened by one of Laurie's alter-personalities. Efficient and beautiful, she cares more about material things. Works at a travel agency.
Sophie, long-time housekeeper of the Kenyon's, practically a member of the family.
Brendon Moody, the feisty investigator to who believes in the phrase "open and shut case."
Vera West, the teacher who loved Allan Grant.
Thomasina Perkins, the only one who saw Laurie with her abductors, now a devout follower of the Reverend Hawkins.
Betsy Lyons, a real estate agent who is taken in easily by Bic and Opal.
Danny "the Spouse Hunter," who is mysteriously hired, not to track an errant spouse, but to report on Laurie and Sarah Kenyon's every move.
Anne Webster, retired owner of the travel agency, who sells the business to Karen Grant.
Connie Santini, secretary at the travel agency, who doesn't like or trust Karen Grant.
